J-BJI Dean’s First Lecture to Freshmen
On 28th September 2017, the Dean of the Jinan University – University of Birmingham Joint Institute, Prof. Wang Chunchao gave all freshmen a speech about How to cultivate innovative thinking as undergraduates. This was the Dean’s first lecture at the beginning of J-BJI’s inaugural semester.
There were three parts to this lecture consisting of the background introduction, the speech, and the Q&A section, which included experience sharing.
After a brief introduction of Prof Wang Chunchao by Li Qiong, Deputy Dean of J-BJI, the speech began. Dean Wang first explained the definition of innovative thinking and how to cultivate an innovative thinking habit. He summarized his views on innovation into four parts: data, research perspective, approaches, and opinions. In each section, Prof Wang delivered the speech with experimental samples combined with his undergraduates’ experience, which made this speech more practical for the students.
He quoted R.H. Coase, a famous British economist, who believed that economists should study real markets besides theoretical ones, to explain the case for the corporation as a means to pay the costs of operating a marketplace.
In the Q&A section, students from J-BJI expressed their doubts about the beginning of their university life. Dean Wang shared his opinions on these questions to students with great patience. He also mentioned some keywords like orientation and goal setting to foster curiosity in the students. Students also said that they gained a great deal from the experience sharing.
Although the Dean’s first lecture has come to an end, our thoughts of cultivating innovative thinking will never stop. The undergraduates learned a lot from the lecture, and they are very much looking forward to the Dean’s next lecture.
