In the last four decades the People’s Republic of China has undergone unprecedented social-economic changes. One of the unique transformations has been the urbanization process across PRC.The pace of China’s urbanization has been very fast with the current rate of 57 percent. The rapid urbanization process has also brought a number of challenges for the central and local governments in PRC. In 2014, the PRC introduced New National Urbanization Plan (2014–20) that provides guideline for achieving sustainable, human-centred, and environmentally friendly urbanization.The New Urbanization Plan aims to promote healthy economic growth, promote social-economic equalities and welfare improvements that is integrated with environmentally friendly development. The China’s urbanization process is of an unprecedented scale that rises a number of challenging questions that need to be rigorously answered. The main theme of the symposium is to address the following key challenges and further opportunities with the urbanization process across provinces:

These topics are suggestive rather than exhaustive: any topic related to China’s urbanization is welcome. In addition, we also welcome other papers discussing urbanization in other countries that possibly relates to the Chinese experience.
To address these issues, the Jinan University-University of Birmingham Joint Institute, Research Centre for China Economic Development and Innovation Strategy at Jinan University, and Centre for Risk, Banking and Financial Services (CRBFS), Nottingham University Business School, University of Nottingham, UK will host the Conference on “The Economic Challenges and Opportunities of Urbanization and Migration in China”. The conference is to be held on January 11-12, 2019 at Jinan University, Guangzhou.
The Conference will provide an open platform that brings scholars, industry experts and policy makers to present current research and stimulate new development in the Regional Economy and Urbanisation. We are also pleased to announce that the selected papers from the conference will be considered for a prospective special issue of China Economic Review and Review of Development Economics. The selected papers will undergo the standard reviewing process.

The Profile of Keynote Speakers:
Prof. Cecilia Wong
Cecilia Wong is Professor of Spatial Planning at Manchester University and the Director of Spatial Policy & Analysis Lab, Manchester Urban Institute
She is a chartered town planner and has over 25 years research expertise on policy monitoring and spatial analysis, strategic planning, and urban and regional development policies. She has conducted major research projects for UK central government departments (particularly DCLG and its predecessors), Joseph Rowntree Foundation, Economic & Social Research Council, Royal Town Planning Institute, Homes and Community Agency, and regional and local bodies. Recently, she was a commissioner of the Lyons’ Independent Review of Housing for the Labour Party.
She has assessed research grants for different international bodies: Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and the Netherlands. She was a member of DCLG’s expert panel on housing and planning and an expert panel member of the European Commission’s Urban Audit II.
Cecilia Wong has extensively published in leading academic journals that include Regional Studies, Planning Practice and Research, Environment and Planning B: Planning and Design, Habitat International, Urban Studies. She is the author of Handbook of Community Well-Being Research. She has also written a number of research reports and submitted them to government departments.
Prof. Eddie Chi Man Hui
Prof Eddie Chi Man HUI is the Associate Head and the professor of Real Estate at the Department of Building and Real Estate at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University; the Academic Discipline Leader of Construction & Real Estate Economics. Prof Hui is the the chief editor of Habitat International, and the associate editor of Journal of Urban Planning and Development (ASCE).
Prof. Hui is an all-round professional with diverse experience in research and consultancy projects. His main research interest is real estate and housing. His current research projects include Analysis of Real Estate Markets,Dynamics of Residential Mobility and Housing Needs of the Elderly, New Effective Indicators of Performance for Real Estate Investors,Public Housing and Subsidized Housing Schemes, Real Estate Investment Decisions,Residential Mobility and Spatial Work-residence Matching and Urban Development in Greater China: Sustainability and Stability. He has published more than 100 articles in well-known journals.
Prof. Hui is currently a member of the Appeal Tribunal Panel under the Buildings Ordinance. He is also a member of the Supervisory Board of the Hong Kong Housing Society, and the Estate Agents Authority. The Chief Executive has awarded Prof. Hui in the Honours list of year 2015. He was presented the Medal of Honour (MH) for his dedicated public service, particularly his contributions to the Town Planning Board and the surveying sector.
Prof. Shunsuke Managi
Prof. Shunsuke Managi is the Distinguished Professor of Technology and Policy & Director of Urban Institute at the Kyushu University; the Adjunct Associate Professor of Graduate School of Public Policy.
He has been awarded several national research grants on topics such as urbanization, transportation, energy, climate change, sustainability, and population change. He is a lead author for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), a coordinating lead author for the Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES), a director for Inclusive Wealth Report 2018 (IWR 2018), an editor of “Economics of Disasters and Climate Change”, “Environmental Economic and Policy Studies”, and “Resource and Energy Economics” and on the editorial board for nine journals including Journal of Forest Economics, and is the author of Technology, Natural Resources and Economic Growth: Improving the Environment for a Greener Future and editor of The Routledge Handbook of Environmental Economics in Asia. He is the co-chair the Scientific Committee of the 2018 World Congress of Environmental and Resource Economists.
He has published in peer reviewed journals such as Science, Nature, Global Environmental Change, Journal of Economic Behavior & Organization, Journal of Environmental Economics and Management, Experimental Economics, Journal of Banking and Finance, Journal of Economic Dynamics and Control, Land Economics, Environmental and Resource Economics, Journal of Regulatory Economics, Resource and Energy Economics, The Energy Journal, International Journal of Production Economics, Omega, Energy Economics, Environment and Development Economics, Ecological Economics, Agricultural Economics, Journal of Industrial Ecology, Energy Policy, and Physica A. Prof. Andy McKay
Andy McKay is professor of Development Economics at the University of Sussex. From 2015 he has acted as managing editor of the Review of Development Economics.
He researches on Development Economics, especially in relation to poverty/inequality and how these are impacted by policy (trade, fiscal etc.); on labour issues including female employment and informality; on inclusive growth; on agriculture; and on international trade.In terms of geographic focus, he works predominantly on Africa, especially East and West Africa, and Vietnam.
He was recently successful in obtaining funding in an IDRC/DFID/Hewlett supported programme on growth opportunities for women. The project is for three years and focuses on early labour market transitions for young women in six Eastern and West African countries.It is to be undertaken in collaboration with Professor Jane Mariara from the University of Nairobi, Professor Andy Newell at Sussex, Dr Cinzia Rienzo at NIESR, London, and a range of African partners. Andy was an associate director of the DFID-funded Chronic Poverty Research Centre (www.chronicpoverty.org) from 2005-11, and an active researcher from 2000-2011.He acts as a resource person for the biannual workshops of the African Economic Research Consortium (www.aercafrica.org), a role he has played since 2005, and served on the steering committee of a collaborative research project on growth-poverty reduction linkages in Africa.
Andy has extensive experience of giving policy advice to bilateral donors including DFID, international organisations and governments of developing countries. He also has significant experience of giving short courses, especially for government employees, in the North and South.
