讲座主题：中国城乡移民的市民化和工资增长

主讲嘉宾：弗吉尼亚理工大学副教授 葛苏勤(Suqin Ge)

讲座内容简介：

本次讲座将以“中国城乡移民的市民化过程和工资增长”为切入点，从劳动经济学角度分析中国劳动力市场的现状。尽管移民工资在移民初期明显低于城市工人的水平，移民工资在移民后的10到15年间快速增长，但是移民工资在长期仍无法达到城市工人的水平。讲座内容将围绕四种影响移民工资增长的因素：(1)人力资本回报的增长；（2）城市工作经验的积累；（3）在职业阶梯上的进步；（4）城市产业部门的变化，从而得出结论：上升的技能回报、城市工作经验的积累和移民在职业阶梯上的转型可以解释所观察到的移民工资增长。

主讲嘉宾简介：

葛苏勤，弗吉尼亚理工大学副教授，2000 年获复旦大学经济学硕士学位，2006 年获美国明尼苏达大学经济学博士学位。主要研究领域为劳动经济学和中国经济，研究课题包括教育、劳动供给、工资结构、歧视和迁徙。论文在 Journal of Labor Economics, Journal of the European Economic Association, and Journal of Applied Econometrics 等期刊上发表。曾获评美国劳工部2015年年度学者 （U.S Department of Labor Scholar 2015）。参与的跨学科研究项目获得美国自然研究基金的资助。

Topic：Assimilation and the Wage Growth of Rural-to-Urban Migrants in China

Abstract:

The speaker will analyze the assimilation process and the wage growth of rural-to-urban migrants in China in the perspective of labour economics. Although migrants initially earn significantly less than urban workers, their wages rise more rapidly with city experience in the first 10 to 15 years. However, migrants’ wages cannot catch up with those of urban workers in the long run. We then consider four sources of migrants’ wage growth: (1) the rising return to imported human capital, (2) the accumulation of urban work experience, (3) the mobility up the occupational ladder, (4) the sectoral transition in cities. We find that rising prices of skills, accumulated urban experience, and occupational transitions account for the observed wage growth of migrant workers in China.

Profile of the Speaker:

Suqin Ge is an Associate Professor of Economics at Virginia Tech. She obtained her Master’s degree in Economics from Fudan University and her Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota. Professor Ge’s research focuses primarily on labor economics and the Chinese economy. Her work has covered a wide range of topics including education, labor supply, wage structure, discrimination, and migration. She has published journals including Journal of Labor Economics, Journal of the European Economic Association, and the Journal of Applied Econometrics. She received the Honor of U.S Department of Labor Scholar in 2015. She is a co-investigator in an interdisciplinary program that is funded by U.S National Science Foundation.
