 讲座内容简介

Abstract

The field of Corpus Linguistics has been particularly valuable in clarifying the nature of academic language. In this lecture I shall give three examples of corpus-based studies of Academic English. The first example is the use of Pattern Grammar to underpin the study of academic disciplines and the ways they transmit knowledge. The study focuses on nouns followed by that-clauses. The second study shows how the ideology of scientific discovery informs a popular account of Darwin’s life. Although Darwin’s ideas and actions are represented in detail, key discoveries are attributed to nature rather than to people. The final study takes a completely quantitative approach to words in texts (known as Topic Modeling), and demonstrates how it might be used to explore the subject matter of an interdisciplinary academic journal. In describing these three examples, the lecture discusses the roles of “the person” and “the machine” in carrying out research of this kind.
